"The single‐procedure efficacy of FIRM‐guided ablation was 84.3% at 2 years, results that we consider impressive given conventional outcomes (in this study 50.5%)."

"Current atrial fibrillation ablation techniques target regions of the heart where the abnormal rhythms associated with the disease may initially be triggered, but not the actual locations of the irregular activity. That could change, however, based on research presented last week employing a novel diagnostic mapping system to locate the electrical building blocks of AF rhythms for ablation."

"the CONFIRM Trial, presented by Dr. Sanjiv Narayan and colleagues, could potentially represent a paradigm shift in our understanding and ablative treatment approach of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). This study could dramatically impact AF management..."

"The results are even more impressive for several reasons: (1) 84% of the FIRM patients were monitored by implantable loop monitors, which is a very precise means to accurately detect episodes of AF; (2) this data described two year outcomes, which speaks to the durability of the approach; (3) this data was accomplished with a single procedure and is considerably better than the conventional method. (4) the success in treating patients in the trial with persistent AF is remarkable; typically this patient subset achieves the poorest outcomes with catheter ablation and often require a second or third catheter ablation to overcome their AF and return to normal sinus rhythm; (5) FIRM rapidly terminated AF predominantly to normal sinus rhythm in less than 10 minutes prior to conventional ablation."

"Heart Rhythm Society President Douglas L. Packer commented that because AF ablation procedures take a substantial amount of time, a technical advance that shortens that time "would be of enormous significance to operators, patients, and payers."

"During the press conference, Doug Packer, MD, of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and outgoing HRS president, commented on the trial, noting that the technology enables physicians to map arrhythmias based on real physiology, unlike the anatomical methods currently in use, and it has the potential to shorten procedure times. Anything that can achieve the latter goal would offer an “enormous benefit,” he said."

"The market opportunity is huge, physician interest is high, and the clinical and regulatory hurdles are significantly less than any other meaningful emerging medical technology that we can think of outside of Topera’s new AF technology."

Topera Medical developed and received FDA approval for RhythmView™ System to assist electrophysiologists in the identification of the electrical source of cardiac arrhythmias. The RhythmView™ System is designed to provide electrophysiologists with a dynamic representation of the electrical activity of the heart, supporting the diagnosis of and treatment planning for a variety of arrhythmias including atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and atrial fibrillation (AF).
